The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code on your website that tells Meta when someone views a page or becomes a lead. The Conversions API sends the same information from your server or CRM instead of the browser, so events are not lost to ad blockers and privacy settings. Using both gives Meta better data, which usually means better targeting and cheaper results.
Why tracking matters for your ad costs
When you run a lead campaign, Meta looks for more people like the ones who became leads. If it cannot see who became a lead, it guesses. Better data means Meta shows your ads to more of the right people, and you pay less for each lead.
The Meta Pixel
The Pixel runs in the visitor’s browser. It records events such as PageView and Lead and sends them to Meta. It is quick to install, but browser tracking can miss events because of ad blockers, cookie choices and privacy features on phones.
The Conversions API
The Conversions API (often called CAPI) sends events directly from your server, website platform or CRM to Meta. Because it does not rely on the browser, it catches events the Pixel can miss. You can also send events that happen later, like a lead becoming a paying customer.
Why you use both
- More complete data: each one fills gaps the other leaves.
- Deduplication: when both send the same event with a matching event ID, Meta counts it once.
- Better match quality: sending details such as email and phone number (securely hashed) helps Meta match events to real people.
A simple tracking checklist
- Install the Pixel on every page, including your landing page and thank-you page.
- Fire a Lead event when someone submits your form or books a call.
- Set up the Conversions API through your website platform, CRM or a partner integration.
- Make sure both send the same event ID so Meta can deduplicate.
- Check Events Manager to confirm events are coming in and look at your match quality.
- Optimise your campaign for the Lead event, not clicks.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the Conversions API if I have the Pixel?
It is strongly recommended. The Pixel alone can miss events because of ad blockers and privacy settings; the Conversions API fills those gaps.
Is the Meta Pixel legal to use?
Yes, but you must follow privacy laws where you operate, such as showing a cookie notice and having a privacy policy that explains the tracking.
How do I know if my Pixel is working?
Open Events Manager in your Meta account and check that PageView and Lead events are being received, or use the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension.
